Description

Description

Start your trip with a few nights in the gorgeous Les Sources de Caudelie. Set in the famous vineyards of Smith Haute Lafitte, the hotel is renowned for its gastronomy, magnificent location and award winning Spa.

Make a day of it in Bordeaux; admire the splendid Gothic Cathedral Saint Andre, the 15th Century Gate of the Grosse Cloche and brush up on your history at the Musée d’Aquitaine. Visit the wonderful art collection spanning from Matisse to Perugina at the Bordeaux Musée des Beaux Arts. Take a walk down the mighty Garonne to the 17th century Chartrons quarter of warehouses which buzzes with galleries, boutiques and restaurants.

Famed for its magnificent wines, you’d be a fool not to sample the local produce! The Maison du Vin, Headquarters of the Bordeaux Wine Council has several wine courses you can enjoy and Les Sources de Caudelie can organise a tour and introduction into some of Bordeaux’s legendary wine chateaux which are notoriously difficult to get into.

An absolute must during your stay is a stop at Fernant whose riverfront terrace makes the perfect spot for slurping some shellfish and sampling the glorious wine of this magical city.
For those looking for something more energetic, we can organise a cycle tour around the city and vineyards including bikes and maps. After a couple of nights head east to Chateau de la Treyne, a fairytale castle in Lacave. En route stop at La Roque Gageac – a town clinging to the hillside above the River Dordogne and framed by lacy trees, is any photographer’s dream! Stretch your legs meandering along the riverside path before indulging in a delicious picnic of French bread, cheese and wine.

On arrival at Chateau de la Treyne work off your lunch exploring the surroundings and a few games of tennis before returning to a delicious dinner in the Grand Louis xiii Salon, or on the terrace overlooking the Dordogne. The next few days can be spent relaxing by the pool, or for the more adventurous the hotel can organise mountain biking, hunting, golf, fishing and riding all available nearby and canoeing down the Dordogne with a picnic homemade by the Chateau is an absolute must! There are a few day trips to nearby towns that make for lovely outings.
Domme is a mediaeval walled village that has for centuries stood guard high above the river and commanded a magnificent panorama. The town itself is enchanting, with ramparts that date from the 13th century and narrow streets that wind through its old quarter and past a lovely 14th-century Hôtel de Ville. At the town centre under the old marketplace, you’ll come across some interesting stalactite and stalagmite grottos. However, Domme’s main attraction is its spectacular views out over the Dordogne and across the beautiful French countryside – the best vantage point is from the Terrasse de la Barre. Sarlat, to the west, has a delightful old quarter with narrow cobbled streets that wind through a maze of magnificent gourmet shops and is a hive of activity and colour on market day.The church and the Episcopal palace create a roomy space along the narrow bustling streets. The final stop on this itinerary is Chateau de Mercues about an hour south of Chateau de la Treyne. Another fairytale chateau with stupendous views over the River Lot and surrounding Cahors Vineyards. Step back in time, indulge in rich regional cuisine and climb down the immense staircases leading to their magnificent wine cellar where you can take part in tastings of their own and local wines.

Spend a day in Cahors wandering around the narrow old streets lined with medieval houses, Baroque doorways, small fragments of sculpture and the Secret Gardens before admiring the Valentré Bridge, an impressive 14th century fortified bridge that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are various activities available and the hotel has an outdoor pool and facilities for mountain biking, various hiking trails, tennis (on site), and can organise horse riding, water skiing on the river, fishing and there is also a nearby flying club for the more adventurous.

When to travel
With moderate winters and summers, this is a perfect place to visit in the Spring, Summer and Autumn. A spring in France provides the right climate for the picturesque green hills with pretty flowers and calm weather. April showers occur on occasion, but it is nothing an umbrella cannot handle. Spring and summer are especially lovely because of the beauty that these seasons bestow upon the French countryside, however, the Autumn months make travel and site seeing very doable – even with the occasional drizzle and chillier conditions in the evenings as the end of the Autumn draws in.
