Description

Description

Porto is a vibrant and fascinating city, with historic buildings to discover, fabulous restaurants and bars to enjoy, and a rich wine heritage. The ancient port houses of the city surround Porto’s finest hotel, the Yeatman, making it an excellent base for getting to know the city.
The Yeatman is the city’s ‘wine hotel’. Each of the rooms is sponsored by a Portuguese wine producer, providing decoration, pictures and books for the shelves which make each room unique. The ‘vinotherapie’ spa provides treatments based on the healing properties of the grape, and there is even a wine museum within the hotel which includes the world’s largest wine cork!

The next stop we propose is Amarante, a town which may not be well known to British tourist but is absolutely charming, and works well as base not only for exploring the Douro valley to the east, but also the vineyards producing Portugal’s most famous white wine, Vinho Verde, to the north and west. For a stay there we recommend a night or two at Casa da Calcada, the historic home of the former noble rulers of the area. The hotel has a wonderful Michelin starred restaurant, and a great golf course.

Finally spend a few days enjoying the Douro Valley at Aquapura. This hotel is well known for its spa facilities, some of the best in Portugal, and its spectacular valley views. Enjoy a boat cruise along the Douro, or visit a few of the Quintas surrounding Lamego to try some of the best wines Portugal can offer.

When to travel
All year round. The Douro has a micro-climate, which massively boosts the quality and style of its wines, and on average, temperatures are higher than in Porto, and rainfall is less. Spring and autumn are the most popular times to go – April-June and September-October.
