This suggested itinerary is a great way to see some of the strikingly different sights of Southern Italy and enjoy a little luxury at the same time. We suggest starting by flying into Bari airport, picking up a rental car, then driving to Borgo Egnazia and spending a few days exploring the heel of Italy. Then head into undiscovered Basilicata to experience a new look at rural Italy. Palazzo Margherita is a stately 19th century residence in the centre of a sleepy Italian rural town lovingly converted into a highly luxurious yet tiny boutique hotel by film director Francis ford Coppola. Learn to make the region’s typical ‘Orecchiette’ pasta, bike around the countryside, and be sure to stop to see one of the most impressive sights of southern Italy, the UNESCO world heritage site at Matera, where medieval residents made their homes in the caves and grottos of the cliff face.

When to travel
