Description

Description

First stop is Lapland for some fun in the snow and a chance to spy the Northern Lights. Then home via the stylish capital of Stockholm for some shopping, gastronomy and spa time.

The Ice Hotel seems to be a “bucket-list” hotel, even the manager says so! This utterly unique hotel north of the Artic Circle is truly spectacular. Hewn each year from ice blocks harvested from the river Thorne, artists are hand picked to design an art suite each and spend weeks perfecting their creations using “snice” – a mixture of snow and ice that resembles cement and “welding” with water which turns to ice and melds the structures together. A plethora of winter activities are on offer – everything from husky sledding to Northern Lights safaris, laid back snow-shoeing to thrilling snow-mobiling. And for something a little different choose one night in the wilderness camp reached by husky sled.

After a stay in the winter wonderland of Swedish Lapland you can retreat to the luxury of the boutique hotel Lydmar right on the waterfront in Stockholm. You have to fly home via Stockholm from Kiruna anyway, so stopping off for a couple of nights will really put the icing on the cake of your Scandinavian adventure. The Lydmar is owned by the vast Grand Hotel Stockholm next door which has its advantages – access to the incredible Nordic Spa being the highlight! Stockholm is the perfect city for ambling around with superb shopping and restaurants, the ubiquitous cafe culture of Swedish “fika” and the most welcoming of locals.

When to travel
As construction of the hotel is subject to the whims of Mother Nature, an exact time frame cannot be guaranteed, but the Ice Hotel usually remains open to guests from December through to April when the hotel closes to allow the thaw back into the River Thorne. Stockholm can be visited year round but December is wonderful with the special Swedish Christmas smörgåsbord the julbord on offer as well as fabulous Christmas markets.
