St Paul’s Cathedral
The Cathedral dedicated to St Paul has overlooked the City of London since 604 AD, a constant reminder to this great commercial centre of the importance of the spiritual side of life. The current Cathedral – the fourth to occupy this site – was designed by the court architect Sir Christopher Wren and built between 1675 and 1710 after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. Its architectural and artistic importance reflect the determination of the five monarchs who oversaw its building that London’s leading church should be as beautiful and imposing as their private palaces.

Dominating the London skyline, the magnificent domed cathedral, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, was completed in 1710. Visitors can now enjoy a new inclusive multimedia guide which weaves together contemporary photography, archive film footage (including the wedding of HRH Prince Charles & Lady Diana Spencer) and the voices of those who work in St Paul’s today, with interviews and commentary from the Dean of St Paul’s, the Conservator and Director of Music amongst others.

St Paul's Cathedral Tickets - Skip the Line

New Exhibition – Oculus: an eye into St Paul’s
Visitors can also enjoy the new exhibition ‘Oculus: an eye into St Paul’s’. The first project of its kind in a cathedral, Oculus uses 270° films to bring 1400 years of history to life. Located in the atmospheric former Treasury in the crypt, Oculus takes visitors to Saxon London amidst the construction of the first St Paul’s in 604 AD, through the buildings on the site that have fallen to fire and disrepair, before showing them the Great Fire of 1666 and the devastation of London during the Blitz when St Paul’s became a lasting symbol of strength, survival and hope.

The Golden Gallery
The Golden Gallery is the smallest of the galleries, which runs around the highest point of the outer dome, 280ft (85.4 metres) and 530 steps from ground-level. While the dome and galleries were being built, Wren was hauled up and down in a basket at least once a week to inspect the work in progress. He was 76 by the time this work was completed in 1708 and he watched as his son placed the last stone in position.

The Dome
St Paul’s is built in the shape of a cross, with the dome crowning the intersection of the arms. It is one of the largest Cathedral domes in the world, 111.3 metres high. It weighs approximately 65,000 tonnes and is supported by eight pillars. Between the arches of the inner dome are mosaics of prophets and saints, which were installed between 1864 and 1888. The murals in the dome were created between 1715 and 1719 by court painter Sir James Thornhill and feature scenes from the life of St Paul.

The Stone Gallery
The Stone Gallery is one of the two galleries above the Whispering Gallery that encircle the outside of the dome. The Stone Gallery stands at 173 ft (53.4 metres) from ground-level. It is reached by 378 steps. While the Dome and galleries were being built, Wren was hauled up and down in a basket at least once a week to inspect the work in progress. He was 76 by the time this work was completed in 1708 and he watched as his son placed the last stone in position.

The Whispering Gallery
The Whispering Gallery runs around the interior of the Dome and is 259 steps up from ground-level. It gets its name from a charming quirk in its construction, which makes a whisper against its walls audible on the opposite side.

Behind the scenes…
The Necropolis Bus Company began in the 19th Century as a private bus service. The Necropolis vehicles- or ‘Carcass Coaches’ as they were known to Londonders- were able to convey the deceased, pall bearers and up to 52 mourners (no standing) to their final resting place. Each bus had an onboard conductor/ chief mourner and a special siren or ‘mourning whistle’ to warn pedestrians of the buses approach. The sound of the whistle prompted gentlemen to remove their hats and bow their heads as a mark of respect.

Ashes to Ashes…
Regular service ran until 1967 when a tragic fire at the company depot in South Dulstead razed the building to the ground and destroyed almost the entire fleet of buses. Only one vehicle was salvaged from the flames and was locked in a storage facility for 40 years. It has now been restored to its original design and is operated by Necrobus as a sightseeing service in central London

Bus to Bus…
The bus is painted in the company’s traditional colour of midnight black. The interior seating is arranged in ‘railway style’ for comfort and so the passengers can grieve openly and offer condolences to one another. Decorative features include lamps and window curtains which were always drawn if a coffin was stored in the vehicle overnight. This is based on the superstition that a departed spirit might be trapped by its own reflection in the glass and would be unable to pass into the other world. It also helped to keep the bodies cool in the summer months.

The Shard The View from the Shard Tickets

The View from The Shard
At almost twice the height of any other viewing platform in London, The View from The Shard offers visitors the chance to embark on a multi-sensory journey to 244m (800ft) above one of the greatest cities on earth. Situated at the top of The Shard, the tallest building in Western Europe at a height of 1,016ft (310m), a 360 degree, 64km (40mile) view reveals London’s past, present and future, brought to life with multimedia displays.

Entrance and Level One:
From the entrance at Joiner Street, guests begin their exploration of the UK’s capital. Over 140 famous Londoners in playful juxtapositions.

Around the gallery, animated maps and video screens set the historic context of The Shard’s London Bridge location – the oldest crossing point over the Thames – around which the city has expanded.

Guests also have the opportunity to have their picture taken in front of ‘green screens’ capturing them in front of the perfect view over London. Prepare to travel skywards towards the view.

Soaring Skywards
In total, guests travel in four separate lifts up and down to the viewing galleries. The lifts travel at six meters per second, making the total lift journey time from Level 1 to level 68 around 60 seconds.

Transfer Zone (Level 33)
Guests transfer lifts at Level 33 through an all-enveloping graffiti word map of London.

The Cloudscape (Level 68)
Guests depart the lifts at level 68. Here the view is obscured with playful cloudscapes and the names of different cloud formations that guests might see from the viewing decks on Levels 69 and 72.

Each cloud has an indication of what weather might be following its appearance.

The indoor viewing galleries and Tell: Scopes (Level 69)
Level 69 is the triple-height, light-filled, main viewing gallery where breath-taking, 360 degree views for up to 40 miles (64km) over the capital are revealed.

The city of London is brought to life on 12, free to use, ‘Tell: scopes’ – ultra high-tech digital telescopes that are being used in Europe for the first time. The Tell: scopes enable guests to explore the city around them in real time, as well as offering alternative (pre-recorded) day and night-time views. Fully interactive, they are able to identify over 200 famous landmarks and places of significant interest and offer information about them in 10 languages.

Partially outdoor viewing gallery (Level 72)
For the most profound experience, guests can go higher to the viewing gallery at Level 72 (800ft/244m). Here, at the very highest public level of the building, partially open-air and exposed to the elements, guests are surrounded by the giant shards of glass that form the top of The Shard and can fully experience the sounds and atmosphere of the city below. Looking up guests can see the very pinnacle of the shard (see above).

Share your experience online free
The entire attraction offers free Wi-Fi. Guests can immediately share pictures, thoughts and views as they stand over the city with friends all over the world. Experiences can also be shared on The View from the Shard’s Facebook page and on Twitter using the hashtag #shardview.

The Sky Boutique – the highest shop in London
Level 68 features an exclusive boutique that enables guests to take home mementoes of their visit to The View from The Shard with bespoke designs and limited edition souvenirs.

One of the gifts on sale is a cuddly fox toy in honour of Romeo, the fox that was found roaming the upper levels of The Shard during its construction. Romeo survived by eating scraps of food left by builders before being captured, cared for by vets and released back into the London bridge area.
